There are some things you just have to see to believe, and Tofino’s glowing summer waters are one of them. Bioluminescence is one of nature’s most magical light shows, and if you’re lucky enough to visit in late summer, you might just catch it in action.

Imagine tiny sparks of light dancing in the ocean as you splash your feet in the surf, or watching the water shimmer as a wave rolls in under the stars. It’s surreal, peaceful, and unlike anything else, it happens right here on the West Coast.

What Is Bioluminescence?

In simple terms, bioluminescence is caused by microscopic plankton (called dinoflagellates) that emit light when disturbed. Think of them as the ocean’s fireflies, only glowing blue instead of yellow. When the water is calm and dark, even a small ripple can light up the surface, creating an unforgettable effect.

These glowing displays are most visible:

  • On warm summer nights (late July through September)
  • When the moonlight is low or there’s a new moon
  • In calm, sheltered waters away from bright lights

Best Ways to See Bioluminescence in Tofino

There are a few ways to safely and responsibly enjoy this natural phenomenon. Here are some of the best night-time options, depending on your comfort level and experience:

Night surf at Cox Bay or Chesterman Beach (Experienced Surfer Only!)

For experienced surfers only, night sessions during bioluminescence are unforgettable. Picture glowing waves breaking beneath your board, but be aware this is only recommended if you know the area well and are confident in the dark.

Night dip Swimming at Tonquin Beach

Or head to Mackenzie Beach or Chesterman Beach for a late-night splash, These beaches are more sheltered and accessible for a gentle night swim or toe dip. Just be mindful of tides and always bring a friend.

Splash your feet at the shoreline in front of the hostel

While we don’t recommend swimming in front of the hostel due to strong currents and boat traffic, you might see the water shimmer with light during late summer nights. Always check with our front desk staff first, we’re happy to suggest the safest and best viewing spot for that evening, or just for a night walk.

Guided Bioluminescence Kayaking Tour

If you want the glow without getting wet, book a guided bioluminescence tour with Paddle West Kayaking. These safe, evening kayak tours are led by knowledgeable guides who take you to calm, quiet waters where bioluminescence is often strongest.

And this year, they’ve partnered with Chocolate Tofino, so you can sip a hot chocolate while floating under the stars, watching the water glow around you. It’s hands-down one of the most magical (and cozy) ways to enjoy the experience.

Tips for Viewing It Safely and Comfortably

Whether you’re walking to the beach at night or go for a kayaking tour, here are a few simple tips to make the most of your experience:

  • Dress in layers. Even in summer, nights on the water can get chilly.
  • Avoid bright flashlights or phone screens. Let your eyes adjust to the dark to see the glow clearly.
  • Bring a dry bag. Especially if you’re on a SUP. Things will get damp.
  • Go with a guide. They know the best spots and will keep you safe on the water.
