The streets are covered in falling leaves, sweaters are coming out, and the first pumpkin spice lattes of the season are officially live. Welcome to October in Tofino! Every local’s favourite time of year, when the rainforest really comes alive.

Summer may be over but don’t let that disappoint you, the real fun is only just about to begin. The beaches become quieter, the forest starts to sound like your favourite guilty pleasure vampire movie and storm season brings some seriously impressive waves to the West coast.

Early glimpse at Storm season

October in Tofino for Early Storm Season

Forget the pumpkin patch! One of the best ways to experience a true Tofino fall is by spending the day storm watching, whether you’re inside a cosy local café like Driftwood Café or you’ve got your rain jacket on and are braving the elements out on one of the many beaches.

Storm watching in the Pacific Northwest simply cannot be beat. Watch the waves roll in, listen to the rain hit the windows, and enjoy the wild side of the coast that makes Tofino so special. October is still early in the storm watching season, and Tofino in October is often surprisingly warm and sunny, but you still get a good first glimpse at what’s to come in the next weeks.

Your first time storm watching? Here’s a small list of some essentials you don’t want to be without:

  • Waterproof shoes, seriously, people forget this. No one wants soggy feet.
  • Spare socks, in case the waterproof shoes fail you. Again, no one wants soggy feet.
  • A waterproof phone case, you’re going to want to keep your phone dry while getting the perfect shot.
  • A good-quality rain jacket and layers, layers, layers!

Pro tip: Stay well back from the water during big swells. The ocean is powerful, and conditions can change quickly.

Endless Cozy Coffee Shops

Cozy Coffee shop in Tofino

Pumpkin spice season is well and truly underway in Tofino, and we couldn’t be happier about it. If you are a coffee connoisseur or simply love spending a slow afternoon in a cosy café, you will be in your element. The options are endless. You could spend the whole day café hopping and still not see all the great coffee shops Tofino has to offer. Couple this with browsing the local downtown shops and you really have the perfect fall day ahead of you.

Here’s exactly what I would do for the perfect cosy café-hopping and shopping day. Bonus points if it’s a rainy one:

Start the morning slow with a quick walk over to Harbourview Coffee Shop and enjoy your morning beverage with one of the best views in town. Once you’re caffeinated for the day, head over to Savary Island Pie Company for the perfect late breakfast. Don’t let the name fool you, there are plenty of sweet pie options for those of you with a sweet tooth.

Once you’re fuelled up for the day, you’re ready to hit the town. Head over to the Tofino Market, held every Saturday until Thanksgiving, and check out some of the local shops. Some favourites include The Mermaid Tales Bookshop, Caravan Beach Shop and Salt Tofino.

Now, if you’ve not started to get the coffee shakes, I have one more stop for you: Common Loaf Bake Shop. A Tofino staple for over 50 years, Common Loaf serves homemade baked goods including fresh cinnamon buns and artisan breads.

Some honourable mentions:

Rainforest Walk

October Rainforest Walk in Tofino

Well, duh… you’re visiting a rainforest during its wet season, so grab your rain jacket and get outside. And for all my Twilight fans, this one’s for you.

The Rainforest Trail is one of those walks that’s even better when the weather is a little miserable. It’s about a 20-minute drive from downtown Tofino, and if you’ve never experienced the Pacific Northwest rainforest before, it’s a pretty good introduction. The trees are huge, everything is covered in moss, and the rain just makes the whole place feel more atmospheric. If you can, go on a super rainy day. That’s when it really comes alive.

No car? Tonquin Trail is an easy alternative straight from downtown and only a short 10 to 15-minute walk from Whalers Guesthouse & Tofino Hostel. You’ll still get plenty of those massive Western red cedars, but with the added bonus of weaving along a few of Tofino’s beaches before eventually reaching Tin Wis Beach (formerly known as MacKenzie Beach).

And if you’re heading back into town cold and soggy, do yourself a favour and stop at Wildside Grill for some poutine. Nothing fancy, just exactly what you want after a rainy walk. Still room for dessert? Try Chocolate Tofino (just next to Wildside Grill – for the best ice cream and sweet treats in Tofino!)

Surf season isn’t over

Surfing in Tofino October

Tofino is famous for its surfing! If you are new to surfing maybe this isn’t the right time of year to start your journey…but if you’re a seasoned surfer with thick skin (it gets pretty cold out here) then Tofino is the dream surf destination.

The water is cold (very cold), so a good wetsuit is non-negotiable, but the upside is that the waves start getting bigger as the season goes on. There’s a reason surfers keep coming back to Tofino long after summer is over. And if surfing isn’t your thing? There’s something pretty nice about grabbing a coffee and watching everyone else get absolutely battered by the waves from the beach.

Halloween in Tofino

Halloween in Tofino

Halloween in Tofino feels a little different. It’s a small, close-knit community, so there’s something really nice about celebrating alongside the locals. Especially when the fog rolls through the rainforest and the whole place starts feeling slightly spooky.

There’s no shortage of ways to spend the weekend, whether that’s carving pumpkins, settling in for a spooky movie night, taking the kids trick-or-treating, or getting dressed up and heading to the Dirty Maq for a night out.

What else is happening in October?

October is a pretty jam-packed month here in town, with endless options for things to do. For those of you who want to avoid the crowds or escape the city for a cosy vacation, Tofino just might be it for you.

There’s everything from comedy nights and concerts to Oktoberfest and paint nights. Whether you’re looking for a quiet weekend in the rainforest or want to get involved with the local community, plenty is going on. For more information on local events, check out Tourism Tofino’s events calendar.

So, is Tofino worth visiting in October?

We might be biased, but YES – we absolutely think so!

October isn’t about chasing perfect weather. It’s about swapping beach towels for rain jackets, sunset beers for steaming cups of coffee, and summer crowds for quiet trails and stormy beaches.

Come see what you think, October might just surprise you.
